Watching a child underperform in school tests, national examinations, or high-stakes assessments such as the SAT can leave parents feeling helpless and uncertain about the next steps.
Examination Access Arrangements are reasonable adjustments made during tests or examinations to reduce the impact of a student’s difficulties, without changing learning outcomes.
Common examples may include:
– Extra time
– Reduced-distration setting/ seperate room
– Use of assistive technology
– Reader of scribe technology
– Breaks during testing
– Paper format adjustments (where appropriate)
An Exam Access Arrangements Assessment is a targeted psychoeducational evaluation that identifies whether a child requires reasonable adjustments for school examinations, national certificate exams, or standardised tests including the SAT.
The assessment examines key areas that commonly affect timed performance, including:
– Processing speed
– Working memory
– Reading fluency and accuracy
– Writing speed and moor skills
– Attenion and sustained focus
– Other cognitive and academic factors relevant to examination conditions.
The resulting report provides objective, standardised evidence that schools, Special Educational Needs Officers (SENOs), and examination boards can use to approve appropriate access arrangements.
This assessment is suitable for children and adolescents who:
– Consistently run out of time in tests and examinations despite knowing the material
– Have a known or suspected learning difference (e.g., dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, or slower processing speed)
– Require formal documentation to apply for extra time or other accommodations in school exams or external tests
– Need professional evidence to support applications for additional learning support during school hour
– Early and accurate assessment helps prevent unnecessary stress, protects self-esteem, and ensures the child is assessed on knowledge and skills rather than speed alone.
Neurodivergence is not a deficit but a different way of thinking, learning, and experiencing the world. With the right understanding, support, and environment, neurodivergent individuals are able to explore and optimise their unique functional capabilities, unlocking their strengths and achieving their fullest potential. It is a lifelong journey of exploration, learning, and achievement that is deeply personal and profoundly meaningful.
